August Update

One week to go in August! Crazy to think that summer is winding down and fall is right around the corner. Since our trip to New Zealand in July, we’ve been putting in lots of solid training and getting back into the swing of things in southern VT. The focus of this month has been logging serious hours, with the addition of more high intensity  interval training. We just wrapped up a big block of training highlighted by an excruciatingly hot time trial and some epic over distance (3+ hours) runs through the Green Mountains.

For the last two weeks we have been hosting two Midwest skiers Kyle Bratrud and Ian Torchia. It has been awesome having them join the group. Unfortunately we scared Ian off with three unforgiving games of Settlers of Catan in a row, he claims that he “has to go back to school” but we know better.

August has been hot and humid. No better way to stay cool than a post workout swim in the snow making pond at the base of the mountain.

Another highlight the last week or so has been seeing more of my old teachers from SMS around campus. It’s really fun to see everyone gearing up for school right now getting classes and facilities ready for the fall.

Now that our final “summer block” is over its time to absorb all our training and get organized for the months ahead. Once September rolls around things start to get pretty busy with a US Ski Team camp in Lake Placid and several team events around Stratton. This week everyone is taking one final breath before the fall kicks off and most people are heading home or taking short trips around New England. I’m looking forward to some time on the lake and hopefully a trip or two up to the White Mountains. First up is a two day fishing trip with Grandpa John!
