Season Wrap

Sophie takes a look at what the team’s done this past winter.

It seems like yesterday when we were all packing our bags in November to head to the first races of the season, but four months and a ton of races have flown by and our season has come to a close. It’s been a historic season for our little club team of SMS T2 and here are some of the highlights!

Our junior and U23 skiers all traveled to Romania for U23 and World Junior Championships. Katharine and Julia posted the best U.S. junior results in the distance and sprint races and Paddy posted the best U23 distance result. Ben was one of two U.S. skiers to qualify in the U23 sprint.

Annie Hart, Erika, Paddy, and Katharine each won a Super Tour this year. Annie Hart finished on the podium in both sprints at U.S. Nationals, Katharine was the top junior and made it onto the senior podium in the skate distance race, and Erika placed 3rd in the Birkie. Paddy and Annie Pokorny both joined the college circuit where they each were regulars on the podium and stood on the top step. Erika and Julia both traveled to the OPA cups where Julia raced her way to the OPA junior podium.

Annie Hart and Katharine qualified and joined our U.S. team members Jessie, Sophie, Simi, and Andy for the World Cups in Canada. These were the first World Cups for Annie and Katharine and Katharine scored her first World Cup points and Annie was close to the top 30 in several races.

The U.S. Ski Team had eight individual podiums on the World Cup this year and they all came from SMS T2 skiers. Jessie won her first World Cup and had five World Cup podiums, ending the season ranked 8th in the overall, 8th in sprinting, and 9th in distance. Sophie also won her first World Cup and ended the season ranked 7th in sprinting.

Simi had two World Cup podiums and ended his season ranked 10th in sprinting. Andy had a 4th place World Cup result and ended his season in the sprint red group once again. Simi and Jessie were both third in the Gatineau sprint which was the first time a U.S. man and woman have been on the podium in the same day. Jessie and Sophie were both part of the 4x5km relay team that placed second, the best relay result the U.S. women have ever had.

We’re proud to say we have accomplished our goals of international excellence and local inspiration this year. Thank you to everyone who has supported us, all the kids who come out to train with us in the summer, all the fans who came to Canada to watch us race, and to everyone who wakes up at 4 in the morning to watch our World Cup races. They say it takes a village. Our team may be small, but our ski family is huge and we thank you all for being a part of it!
