Speed camp in Bend!

Andy shares what the guys of the SMS team were up to while the girls did Fast and Female.

On Sunday the US Ski Team Men hosted our first ever Bend Oregon Speed Camp. With so many strong junior skiers in the area we jumped at the opportunity to hold our first Speed Camp of the 2017 training season here in Bend. Typically these free clinics are held on roller skis or snow but because it is still early in the training season we thought it would be a great opportunity to showcase some more drylands ski training drills to the kids.

In typical Speed Camp fashion everything is based upon moving fast and most importantly having fun. Ian and Simi led the group through a warm up of mobility and agility. Running though the speed ladders and jumping hurdles is a super fun way to get the kids moving in a more athletic way before moving onto the ski drills.

For the ski training portion I led the group through a number of drills to teach proper ski waling and ski bounding technique. I think it’s a great message for the kids to realize that all they need are some poles and running shoes and they can try just like the best skiers in the world. The kiddos got a great workout bounding up and down the hills in the park.

For a speed camp first we had Noah set up a grueling 15 station strength circuit, which we had the campers run through doing each exercise for 1 minute. It was a cool way to teach the kids some new strength and core exercises they can work on even without a gym. Everyone was so worked by the end it was time to enjoy some Picky Bars, provided by the local energy bar company and ask a few questions.
It’s a Speed Camp ritual that at the end each camper needs to ask one question before receiving a T Shirt. It’s always cool to hear some of the questions they come up with about training, racing, and some of the every day things that go into being a professional skier. Thanks to Craft for providing us with some awesome green shirts this year!
