The Western Tour continues! After wrapping up U.S. Nationals in Park City, Utah the team headed west to Truckee, California for the next stop on the Super Tour circuit. We arrived in Truckee just in time to enjoy a perfect, bluebird day of skiing at Royal Gorge and Sugar Bowl. Truckee is home to one of the largest cross-country trail networks in North America – it was hard to resist heading out for an all day adventure!
Then the snow started on Wednesday… Over the next five days it snowed constantly with more than seven feet accumulation by Sunday afternoon. The Super Tour weekend started off with a classic sprint on Saturday. The 1.4 kilometer course was fast and furious starting with a long downhill and flat section before a three tiered climb back up into the stadium. It was a really fun day of sprinting and ended with two SMS Elite Team skiers on the Podium – Ben and Julia!
Unfortunately the race distance race on Sunday was canceled because of the weather – 100+ mph winds and dumping snow. To make up for the missed race we went out for an epic Tour de Truckee right from our doorstep. The roads adjacent to our rental house all had enough snow cover to ski freely through the surrounding neighborhoods. After a few loops near our house we set out for the Tahoe Donner cross country ski area a few miles away – there we found perfectly groomed trails and endless kilometers of skiing.
Julia, Pat and I are all back in Park City for the World Junior/ U23 Championships next week. Yesterday we had our first day of official training in Soldier Hollow – pretty cool seeing all of the teams from overseas out on the trails!
